This was announced by the head of the State Energy Efficiency Agency Sergey Savchuk, the Government portal reported. According to
Savchuk, energy crops as a source of biomass for energy production have long been used in leading EU countries, for example, Italy,
“In Ukraine, there are about 4 million hectares of marginal lands, which should be used for energy crops. We are talking about such areas as, for example, Kyiv, Zhytomyr, Chernihiv, Lviv.” – he said.
According to expert estimates, the use of energy crops for energy purposes, with yields of 11.5 million tons from 1 million hectares, will save about 5.5 billion cubic meters of gas annually. If we reach the full potential of 4 million hectares of these crops, then the volume of gas substitution will reach 20 billion cubic meters, which is 2/3 of the country’s gas supply needs.
“Taking into account this potential, the Agency strives to strengthen cooperation with local authorities, joint efforts to present investors
with concrete entry points for the construction of biomass generating capacities and demonstrating the advantages of growing energy crops to provide them with raw materials” Savchuk said.
